This intensive will cover all things volcanoes, earthquakes, mountain building, and plate tectonics! Students will have the chance to work with real seismometers and analyze data taken from all over the world! Students will be amazed as we watch earthquakes and seismic activity from all parts of the globe that we can sense here in Asheville, NC!
This seismic data will allow students to understand the materials that lie underneath their feet from the crust to the deepest parts of the mantle! We will also be collecting GPS data and looking at rapidly changing landscapes due to continental drift. Using simple yet precise math, students will be able to determine epicenter locations, p/s wave energy, and calculate what the earth might look like in millions of years!
